The One Thing Missing

Good evening and Happy New Month to you.

Today, I was looking at all the different days that celebrate women, and I discovered there were so many more than I realised!

One that caught my attention was National Nail Polish Day in the United States which happens to be today 1st of June. Apparently, it was established in 2017 as a way for a beauty brand to showcase its range of nail polish colours, but over time it became adopted nationally and became an event in itself.

I found it really interesting.

As I was looking through the different shades, it struck me that there seemed to be a colour for everyone. Different hues, different tones, different preferences. Not every colour suits every person in the same way.

And somehow, it got me thinking about this week’s podcast episode.

This week, we’re talking about the one thing that is missing.

I think many of us genuinely want to make a difference. We don’t just want to live our lives; we want our lives to matter. We want to grow. We want to become all that God has called us to be.

The truth is, if we are willing to be honest with ourselves and dig deep enough, we will often discover the answer we have been searching for.

The challenge is not always finding the answer.

The challenge is responding to it.

In Luke 10, Jesus commended Mary for choosing the one thing that was needed. While Martha was distracted by many things, Mary had recognised what mattered most in that moment.

The rich young ruler in Matthew 19 was also searching for the one thing he lacked. He had kept the commandments from his youth and had lived what most would consider a good life. Yet he still sensed that something was missing.

So he asked Jesus.

And Jesus answered.

But when the answer came, he could not accept it.

The disciples faced a similar moment. Jesus called them away from the familiar—their fishing nets, their routines, their security—and invited them into something greater.

For the rich young ruler, comfort was greater than the call.

For the disciples, the call was greater than the comfort they would leave behind.

I wonder how often we ask God for clarity while secretly hoping the answer won't require change.

How often do we pray for transformation while holding tightly to the very thing that stands in the way of it?

Because the one thing will look different for each of us.

For one person, it may be fear.

For another, perfectionism.

For someone else, people-pleasing, control, distraction, comfort, or a limiting belief they have carried for years.

Just as there is a different shade of nail polish suited to different people, there is a different lesson, surrender, or next step that God may be highlighting in each of our lives.

The question is not whether God will reveal it.

The question is:

When He does, what will we do with it?

Will we respond with obedience?

Or will we walk away sad, like the rich young ruler, because the comfort of what we know feels safer than the call into what God has prepared for us?

Reflection Question

What is the one thing you already know God has been asking you to address, surrender, or step into?

"The greatest challenge is not always discovering the one thing.

Sometimes the greatest challenge is saying “yes” when God reveals it."
