God is Not Waiting To Catch You

Key reflectionBecause now the confidence isn’t: “I am absolutely certain I will never get it wrong.” The confidence becomes: “I trust the One who is leading me will never get it wrong.”

Welcome to this new week. I hope you have stepped into it with joy and expectation.

Last week, we talked about being multitalented without becoming multidistracted and I left you with a question:

“Lord, what are You asking me to lead with in this season?”

But perhaps you asked the question.

You prayed.

You listened.

And now another question has appeared:

“But what if I get it wrong?”

What if I think God said go and He didn’t?

What if I choose this opportunity and discover it was the wrong one?

What if I step away from something I should have continued?

What if what I think is God’s direction is simply… me?

Sometimes it isn’t that we don’t want to obey God.

We are simply afraid of getting God wrong.

And that fear can keep us standing in one place long after we should have started moving.

In Part 2 of my conversation with Brenda Unu, I asked her how she decides which of her many gifts and assignments deserves top priority in a particular season.

For Brenda, sometimes God’s instruction has been very clear.

But she made a point I think is important for those times when it isn’t so clear.

God doesn’t speak to everyone in exactly the same way.

Sometimes His direction comes through His Word.

Sometimes through people He has placed around you.

Sometimes through an impression or a pull in your heart.

And sometimes, even after praying, you may still wonder:

Did I hear correctly?

Brenda said something during our conversation that I found very comforting:

Sometimes you may even be wrong in your impression—and that’s okay.

This isn't because direction doesn’t matter or that we should move carelessly.

But because the God who is guiding you, is also able to redirect you when needed.

Brenda used an illustration that drove the point home.

She talked about Lagos traffic officials.

Sometimes, rather than standing where you can clearly see them and helping you avoid making the wrong turn, they seem to appear after you have made it.

Wrong turn.

And suddenly—

There they are!

But Brenda’s point was:

God is not like that.

God isn’t hiding somewhere along the road waiting for you to make one wrong move so He can jump out and say:

“Aha! I caught you. You got it wrong.”

He is your Father.

He guides.

He corrects.

He redirects.

As parents, we can recall the numerous times we've had to redirect our children, why do sometimes imagine that our Heavenly Father would be less gracious with us?

We might have become so afraid of missing God’s will that we have forgotten God’s ability to guide and course correct us.

And hence stay at a stand still but sometimes what we need to do is simply Walk.

Dearest sister , we will need to keep seeking Him.

Every desire will not automatically be God’s direction.

We mustn't run off making careless decisions and attach God’s name to them.

We should pray, search His Word, seek wise counsel and pay attention to His leading.

But after we have done those things, sometimes faith requires movement.

Because there is something reassuring about knowing that if my heart is genuinely surrendered to God and I take a step believing I am following Him, my Father is not standing at the end waiting to condemn me for getting something wrong.

He is able to redirect me as I go.

Maybe you have been sitting on something for months because you keep asking:

“But what if this isn’t God?”

Perhaps another question to ask is:

“If I take this step sincerely seeking God, do I trust Him enough to redirect me if I am wrong?”

That may change your perspective a bit.

Because now the confidence isn’t:

“I am absolutely certain I will never get it wrong.”

The confidence becomes:

“I trust the One who is leading me will never get it wrong.”

So perhaps this week, your prayer can simply be:

“Lord, I don’t want to be outside of You. Show me what You want me to do. Give me courage to move with what You show me, and if I misunderstand You along the way, I trust You to redirect me.”

You don’t have to place your confidence in your ability to hear perfectly.

Place your confidence in the goodness of the God who leads you.
