Could God Really Speak to Me?

3 August 2026
Scripture in this reflectionJob 33:14 · Mark 8

Welcome to another beautiful new week and the month of August.

I remember being a little girl and having a dream that was unusually weighty. I shook it off and said and did nothing significant about it.

Months later, everything happened exactly as I had seen it in my dream and the outcome was not nice. It was then I told the person involved about the dream.

Why hadn’t I said anything earlier?

Because I was just a little girl.

The person the dream concerned was someone much older than me and much further along in their walk with God. I couldn’t imagine that God would reveal something like that to me!

Looking back, I’ve realised how easy it is to minimise what God is showing us because we minimise ourselves.

We allow ourselves to believe that God speaks to those people:

The more spiritually mature ones. Those who’ve walked with Him for decades. The ones who seem to hear Him so clearly. But Job 33:14 (CEV) tells us that:

“God speaks in different ways, and we don’t always recognize his voice.”

You see, it isn't a paucity of God's voice, but that we can completely miss it. Because we’re not always expecting Him to speak in the ways He chooses.

Think about the blind man in Mark 8. After Jesus touched his eyes. In verse 8 it says:

The man looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees walking around.”

He wasn’t completely blind anymore, but neither was he seeing clearly.

I wonder how often that describes us.

How many opportunities have we looked at and seen only obstacles?

How many people have we viewed through the lens of our past hurts rather than God’s love?

How many situations have we interpreted through fear instead of faith?

The way we see will ultimately shape the way we respond.

If that blind man had walked away after his first touch, his interactions with people would have been very different because he wasn’t seeing them as they truly were.

I wonder how often we do the same.

Sometimes the issue isn’t that God isn’t speaking.

Sometimes the issue is that we aren’t yet seeing.

Maybe God is opening our eyes through His Word, through a dream, a deep conviction we can’t shake or even a burden He has placed on our hearts.

I’m not saying every thought, feeling or impression comes from God. We all need to grow in discernment, we need to test what we believe He’s saying, and we weigh it against Scripture.

But I am saying this:

Don’t dismiss something simply because you don’t think you’re the kind of person God would speak to.

Perhaps this week, instead of asking God to say something new, ask Him to help you recognise the ways He may already be speaking.

Reflection Questions

Have I ever dismissed something because I didn’t think God would speak to someone like me? Is there something I’ve been repeatedly sensing that I’ve explained away too quickly? Am I asking God to speak, when perhaps He’s inviting me to see? I'd love for you to listen to a recent interview I had the privilege of being part of. I pray it encourages you on your own journey of faith and becoming.

In this episode, we look at the life of Jochebed and discover how what we see often determines how we respond—and why learning to recognise what God is showing us can change the course of our lives.
